team reflection

Undergoing this project has truly opened our eyes to the deep inequality that lies within the art world and the role that museums have in perpetuating this norm. We each worked to contribute to this website in creating graphics, writing explanations, adding photographic content and gathering data. Creating this succinct website has helped us consolidate the information that we believe is important to understanding this crucial problem that often goes overlooked. We each had a similar perspective when it came to facing the project initially: we knew that there was a situation of inequality happening within museums and galleries. After looking at various numbers and reports, this issue became even more glaring and, candidly, shocking. Considering we are females racialized as white, we were simply unaware of how significant the disparity between white, male artists and female artists of color manifested itself in some of London’s most prominent museums. Upon doing further reading from scholars of black feminism, we were able to understand that this issue has been something that has plagued the art community for decades. Looking into more modern literature, we were able to spot the lack of inclusion of women of color in the conversation regarding gender inequality in this sphere.
